Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs 85% lean ground beef
  • 4 cups Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced to 1/8 inch
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 4 strips turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until fully cooked.
  3. Drain the excess fat from the skillet.
  4. Season the cooked beef with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Spread the seasoned ground beef evenly over the potato layer.
  7. Top with the remaining potato slices.
  8. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, chicken broth, and half of the shredded cheese.
  9. Pour the cheese mixture evenly over the casserole layers.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  11. Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining cheese and crumbled turkey bacon over the top.
  12. Bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly.

Notes

Use a mandoline slicer for consistent 1/8 inch potato slices to ensure even cooking. If you prefer a lighter sauce, you can substitute the heavy cream with half-and-half. Ensure the potatoes are thin enough so they cook through during the allotted time.
